Cloud Computing Options

Are today’s businesses faced with too many cloud computing options? With so many vendors offering numerous cloud choices, it may seem impossible to reach the ‘right’ decision.

Today’s market is flooded with different cloud computing options. From smaller managed service providers offering their own private cloud services, to behemoths like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services, the choices can seem infinite. Can the sheer number of available options result in over-analysis, and the inhibition of the development of a business’s cloud strategy? This is the paradox of choice faced by businesses in 2018.

Cloud Computing Options

Public, private, or hybrid? IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS? Large multinational or smaller, vertically-focused managed service provider? The cloud computing options available to your business can seem overwhelming. And even when you’ve decided on the path you’d like to go down, the choices don’t stop there. Just as an example, Microsoft Azure offers a huge number of variations, each one tailored to meet the needs of specific businesses and individuals but – ultimately – resulting in a headache for anyone not well versed in Planet Microsoft.

The Paradox of Choice

There are more cloud computing options available today than ever before. This seems like great news, and in many ways, the huge variety of choices is of benefit to businesses that know exactly the functionality, security, and price point they are looking for. But what about those who lack the time – let alone the knowledge – to establish which option is right for them?

The psychologist Barry Schwartz has written about the paradox of choice, and how having too many options leaves us anxious and unsatisfied. It doesn’t matter whether it’s cloud computing, running shoes, or breakfast cereals; sometimes we need our available options narrowed. This helps us to avoid the dreaded paralysis by analysis that comes with trying to make the ‘right’ choice from an overwhelming number of options.
